What moisture content is required for biomass pellet production

Moisture content is one of the most important factors affecting biomass pellet quality. Too high or too low moisture will result in cracked, loose pellets, low density and high breakage rate during production.

biomass pellet production

For normal biomass pellet production, the ideal raw material moisture ranges from 12%‑18%. If the moisture is higher than 20%, the pellets cannot form well and are easy to deform. If moisture is below 10%, materials become too dry, causing excessive dust and heavy wear on pellet mill rollers.

Fresh agro‑forestry waste like sawdust, wood chips, straw or EFB usually has 40%‑65% initial moisture. A rotary drum dryer is necessary to reduce moisture to the qualified range before pelleting. Always test your raw material moisture and adjust dryer temperature and speed to keep stable feeding conditions.
